Description

Beyond the Colposcope is a four-hour, evidence-based hybrid educational workshop designed for practising gynaecologists, colposcopists, and healthcare professionals who manage cervical precancerous lesions. The workshop takes its title from a core conviction: outstanding cervical precancer care demands more than technical precision at the colposcope. It requires sound clinical judgement, hands-on procedural competence, and the communication skills to engage meaningfully with each patient.

The program is structured around three explicitly integrated pillars: theoretical knowledge, procedural simulation, and patient communication. Theory sessions use interactive audience polling to surface and correct misconceptions in real time. A dedicated communication module — rarely included in procedural workshops — uses structured role-play to build skills in breaking difficult diagnoses, counselling complicated patients with high-grade lesions, and navigating vaccine hesitancy.

The workshop closes with a global perspectives discussion, reflecting the IPVS mission: faculty and participants from diverse resource settings examine how management principles translate across contexts.

Target Group

Fellows, Senior Physicians, and Consultants in Gynaecology or Gynaecological Oncology; practising colposcopists; and healthcare professionals managing women with cervical precancerous lesions — across high-income and resource-limited settings.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Clinical and Procedural Objectives

  • Apply the updated IFCPC colposcopy nomenclature in clinical practice
  • Use a structured clinical reasoning framework for colposcopy case management
  • Select the appropriate treatment modality (LLETZ vs thermal ablation vs surveillance) for each scenario
  • Correctly set up diathermy equipment, configure settings, and select loops
  • Apply thermal ablation eligibility criteria
  • Adapt cervical precancer management principles to resource-limited settings

Communication and Professional Objectives

  • Deliver a structured breaking-bad-news conversation for a CIN3/AIS diagnosis
  • Counsel a complicated patient (pregnancy, AIS in young adults) with high-grade CIN — balancing patient anxiety and clinical safety
  • Address vaccine hesitancy empathetically and with evidence in a post-treatment consultation
  • Articulate one concrete change to implement in their own clinical practice
  • Engage critically with global perspectives on LMIC cervical precancer management
